1. SBCs provide security. With a Session Border Controller (SBC), you provide an extra layer of security by hiding a servers' public IP address. SBCs also prevent attacks including DoS (denial of service) and massive registration events – whether intentional or not. Often a massive registration event might occur even without a deliberately planned malicious attack. IP endpoints such as phones register regularly with servers, typically once an hour. If the power goes out, the endpoints can't register so that when it does come back on, all the endpoints register at once which can overwhelm just about any server. With an SBC, your server is protected.
2. SBCs translate or mediate various network protocols. Networks use a variety of protocols to transport, encrypt, or encode IP traffic. For example, an SBC can provide Network Address Translation (NAT) which changes public IP addresses into private internal ones – enabling a company to have more people accessing the Internet than it has public IP addresses.
3. SBCs provide revenue assurance. SBCs keep track of all the calls on a network, helping ensure that you bill for every billable call.
