Media Gateways

WHY DO YOU NEED A MEDIA GATEWAY?

1. Media Gateways provide TDM to VOIP migration. A media gateway allows you to easily migrate from a TDM-based network to a Next-Generation VOIP-network. A media gateway ensures service continuity throughout the process of migrating existing TDM infrastructure to soft switches.

2. Media Gateways provide transcoding. Today, there are specific codecs for wireline VoIP, wireless, music and video. Codec proliferation has occurred because engineers have developed additional encoding methodologies to more faithfully reproduce voice (higher quality, as defined by mean opinion score or MOS), allowing them to pack more calls into the same amount of bandwidth. These various codec types are optimized for specific target applications. Transcoding allows you to convert between the different protocols required on today's multi-service networks.
